Manga - Messiah
In 2008 BLF Europe published the French translation of "Manga - Messiah". Through 280 pages it tells the story of Jesus from the announcement of his birth up to his resurrection. And it's excellent! The artwork is typical manga, including the use of little "cute" cartoon-type characters to illustrate astonishment or fear, as is often seen in animated manga. One difference with traditonal manga, however, is that the images are in colour.
It's an excellent manga, easy to read, and staying quite close to the original text of the Bible. Obviously the author hasn't just used the Biblical text as such, but as worked it a bit so that it works in this particular medium. For example, the explanation for the miracles are seen as the thoughts of different disciples. But it stays pretty faithful to the Biblical text.
At a couple of places I thought the author had got it wrong so I checked up the account in the Bible and to my surprise, it was me who'd got it wrong! Just goes to show, even if you're familiar with the Bible, reading it in this form can sometimes help to rediscover familiar episdoes and perahps even see things that you've never noticed before. And what's great is that the Biblical references are given at the bottom of each page to make it easier to go to find the text and read it in full.
Personally, I really liked this Manga, being an avid fan of both comics and the Bible. It helped me discover things in various passages that I'd never really seen before, and through the different characters, I found myself better understanding God's goodness and love.
Here's a 64 page extract in French, published by BLF Europe, which gives an overview of Jesus' life and teachings. Alternatively, you can read Manga - Messiah for free at this link.
